For many healthcare executives, industry restructuring—particularly the rapid rise of matrixed megasystems—has upended the traditional vertical path of advancement. Aspiring leaders must navigate the organizational lattice rather than climb the ladder, and notions of loyalty to any one employer or team seem antiquated if one is to gain the diverse skills and experiences required for continued executive career growth. Younger leaders especially are rethinking the means and meaning of career advancement and looking to move laterally and diagonally to broaden their horizons and accomplish their goals.
